Design Statement
Individuals living with heart disease face physical limitations such as standing for long periods, lifting heavy objects, bending over, reaching overhead, and climbing stairs. Bathing, dressing, home maintenance, and other activities of daily living may also be affected. In addition to physical restrictions, there are emotional considerations. Reducing stress and anxiety is very important. Many of these issues can be addressed by applying accessibility requirements like the ones outlined in the Fair Housing Act requirements for usable doors, accessible environmental controls, reinforced walls for grab bars, and usable kitchens and bathrooms. Widening of the main hallway, the opening into the kitchen from the backdoor, and the bathroom will accommodate the future use of a wheelchair. Hard surface flooring covers all spaces except the two bedrooms for additional ease in mobility. Other design choices focusing on physical limitations include the location of power outlets higher on the wall for easier access, an automated system to control lighting, climate, sound and window treatments, and a furniture plan to facilitate “resting” zones throughout the space. Throughout the residence, clean modern design coupled with earth tones creates a relaxed, calming environment. Fully adjustable layered lighting allows for just the right ambiance in each space. The master suite includes office space, as well as exercise space. Low impact exercise, such as yoga, is beneficial in reducing stress and lowering blood pressure. All of these selections will create an environment to improve the life of a person restricted by the symptoms of heart disease to live a safe and independent life.
